We really felt like Kings and Queens there. We had the ceremony in the dining room surrounded by windows on all sides to allow for the sun to soak in on us. The ceremony was so beautiful and with no one else there it felt very special and intimate. The room was wonderful, especially the jacuzzi which was probably its best feature. The fireplace which is on both the bedroom and the bathroom was also a very nice touch. Other highlights of the stay were the couples massage that we had on our last night there. The masseuse was extremely professional... We ordered the cheese and fruit platter which was fantastic, the assortment of cheeses, crackers and fruit was perfect. Name Inspiration The most famous of the nearby landmarks, Smuggler’s Notch or the “Notch” as locals call it, is a famous mountain pass a few miles from the Inn. The Notch separates Mt. Mansfield, the highest peak of the Green Mountains, from Spruce Peak and the Sterling Range. Smuggler’s Notch derives its name from activities precipitated by a request of Thomas Jefferson to prevent American involvement in the Napoleonic Wars. The Embargo Act of 1807 forbade American trade with Canada and Great Britain, however, with close proximity to Montreal, Canada was a convenient trade partner for Vermonters. The Act cause great hardship to Vermonters, many of whom continued illegal trade with Canada, carrying goods and livestock through the “Notch.” Fugitive slaves also used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. In 1922, the route was improved to accommodate automobiles providing a way for liquor to be brought in from Canada during the Prohibition years. Name Inspiration The name comes from the West Branch River which begins at the base of Mt. Mansfield and runs for about seven miles to merge with the Little River in the village of Stowe. Running just across Mountain Road RT 108 from Stone Hill Inn Property, the West Branch River is a beloved gem with the Stowe Recreation Path winding along its banks past swimming holes and covered bridges. It is one of Stowe’s most spectacular and loved landmarks. Name Inspiration The infamous Catamount is a large wild cat much like a mountain lion or panther, and also known as the Eastern Cougar. It has been declared extinct in Vermont since 2018, although occasionally Vermonter report mysterious sightings. The Catamount, despite being officially extinct, still plays a huge role in the State’s culture as the official mascot for the University of Vermont.
