Name Inspiration Fiddleheads are the furled fronds from a fledgling fern, harvested for use as a vegetable. Left on the plant, each fiddlehead would unroll into a new frond. While the fiddleheads of certain ferns can be harvested and eaten. Vermont is home to a variety of Ferns. Ostrich ferns, known locally as “fiddleheads” grow wild in wet areas of the Northeastern North America in the Spring. Not all fiddleheads are edible, however. Bracken fiddleheads are toxic. The Notch is fully ADA compliant, offering accessibility without sacrificing beauty or comfort. Name Inspiration The most famous of the nearby landmarks, Smuggler’s Notch or the “Notch” as locals call it, is a famous mountain pass a few miles from the Inn. The Notch separates Mt. Mansfield, the highest peak of the Green Mountains, from Spruce Peak and the Sterling Range. Smuggler’s Notch derives its name from activities precipitated by a request of Thomas Jefferson to prevent American involvement in the Napoleonic Wars. The Embargo Act of 1807 forbade American trade with Canada and Great Britain, however, with close proximity to Montreal, Canada was a convenient trade partner for Vermonters. The Act cause great hardship to Vermonters, many of whom continued illegal trade with Canada, carrying goods and livestock through the “Notch.” Fugitive slaves also used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. In 1922, the route was improved to accommodate automobiles providing a way for liquor to be brought in from Canada during the Prohibition years. Sometimes called hard maple or rock maple, it is one of the largest and most important of the hardwood trees. Sap from the trunks of sugar maples is used to make maple syrup. Sugar Maple trees seldom flower until they are at least 22 years old, but they can live to be 300-400 years. It takes 34 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. The leaves of Sugar Maple trees turn brilliant colors of red and gold in the fall making Vermont among the most vibrant of Fall Foliage States.
