The rooms are a few steps away from the peaceful stream/pond, the grounds are beautifully landscaped and the rooms are incredibly clean, quiet, and stocked with everything we could have needed for a romantic get-away. My partner and I finally found our ideal romantic getaway in the Stone Hill Inn. We had an inn-room double massage and even ordered take-out. There was ample space in the room for us to use WiFi to do yoga and meditate and we loved being able to walk/snowshoe right from our room door. Private seating at breakfast kept our experience intimate and we took advantage of the large living room to watch movies from the huge library and had the space all to ourselves. Kristie and Todd were helpful and attentive when needed, but not hovering as can be the case at some establishments. So many inns or resorts only have the top-priced rooms with both a Jacuzzi and fireplace, while the Stone Hill Inn's nine rooms all include these features, and for a better price than other comparable rooms in the area. More about Ballooning in Stowe Ballooning, as you probably know, is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. The first flight was a two-person journey on November 21, 1783 from Paris, France! Pasts guests have gone hot-air ballooning using our local balloon provider Jeff Snyder and his Above Reality balloon company. One couple celebrated their honeymoon by ascending 1,600 feet and traveling over 11 miles. Weather is always a factor and Jeff, designer and builder of balloons, is very conservative. He suggests not betting on only ONE day, but have at least two or three days from which to choose in order to be more assured of getting weather needed for a flight. According to Jeff, very few say that they are afraid once they are in the air. He says that it’s because unlike a cliff, there are no edges to look over when you are in a balloon. We had a chance to experience a taste of ballooning two weeks ago – 75 feet up from in one of Jeff’s tethered balloons. Quiet, soft, fresh perspective. This annual event is held in June. The Notch is fully ADA compliant, offering accessibility without sacrificing beauty or comfort. Name Inspiration The most famous of the nearby landmarks, Smuggler’s Notch or the “Notch” as locals call it, is a famous mountain pass a few miles from the Inn. The Notch separates Mt. Mansfield, the highest peak of the Green Mountains, from Spruce Peak and the Sterling Range. Smuggler’s Notch derives its name from activities precipitated by a request of Thomas Jefferson to prevent American involvement in the Napoleonic Wars. The Embargo Act of 1807 forbade American trade with Canada and Great Britain, however, with close proximity to Montreal, Canada was a convenient trade partner for Vermonters. The Act cause great hardship to Vermonters, many of whom continued illegal trade with Canada, carrying goods and livestock through the “Notch.” Fugitive slaves also used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. In 1922, the route was improved to accommodate automobiles providing a way for liquor to be brought in from Canada during the Prohibition years.
